Early deadline coming Due to the Memorial Day holiday, there will be an early deadline for the May 29 issue of The News-Sun. News and advertising submissions are due on Thursday, May 22, at 4 p.m. Business women meet May 19 The Perry County Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet on May 19 at the Ranch House Restaurant. A social hour will begin at 6:30 p.m. with dinner to follow at 7. The group will be awarding its scholarships. The speaker will be Wendy Welfley. Take note Practice will be held at 7 p.m. on May 18 at the Newport firehouse for the fire company’s drum and bugle corps. This is a tune up for the Memorial Day parade in two weeks. For information, readers may call Jeremy Still, 567-3625. Youth group offers barbecue The Reward Youth Group is offering a chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 24. Pick up will be at the church between 11 a.m. and noon. Reward United Methodist Church is in the Village of Reward, three miles after the turn onto Perry Valley Road. The cost is $4 for a half. Orders may be called to Sharon Powley by Friday, May 16, at 589-3340. The youth also are having a bake sale stand at the church as well. Volunteers needed The cleanup of the Newport graveyard along South Fifth Street will continue from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday until the project is completed. Volunteers are needed. No scopes or chokes are allowed. There will be three meat rounds and one gun round. The cost is $2 a shot. There will be free food and games of chance. Off to the races Teams are forming for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life June 13-14 at Newport Elementary. Club plans outing Newport Civic Club will be taking its annual outing on May 22. The date in the program is incorrect. Please note date change. The outing will be to The Log Cabin Homestead in Elizabethtown, for a program and luncheon on colonial life. The coordinators for this meeting are Nancy Shick (567-6145) and Marie Weidenhammer (589-3618). They can answer any questions about the trip. Carpooling will be available from the Newport playground at 10 a.m. Band together A Newport Marching Band meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 19 in the elementary music room. This is an informational meeting for students and parents. Topics will be time commitment, cost issues, band camp and other items about the 2008-2009 school year. The band banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, in the high school cafeteria.
