Frequently Asked Questions

1. I have a story idea.

We welcome a "heads-up" on county events and the interesting things its residents may be doing. Send an e-mail to editor@perrycountytimes.com. Make sure the subject line says "Peco News". Also include dates, times, contact information and a description of the idea.

2. I'd like to submit my engagement/wedding announcement.

Via e-mail: Send the information to editor@perrycountytimes.com. Check the guidelines below if you are planning to send a digital photo.

Via snail mail: Send the information and a photo, if you wish, to Advance Publications, P.O. Box 130, New Bloomfield, PA 17068. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you would like to have the photo returned.

3. How can I get my community event in the paper? And how much does it cost?

Send us an e-mail to editor@perrycountytimes.com. Make sure the subject line of your e-mail says "Peco News" so that it can be easily distinguished from spam!

Community events are printed on a space available basis for free. If you would like to make sure your event appears in the newspapers on a specific date, consider placing a display ad.

4. How much does it cost to have an engagement/wedding announcement, anniversary, five-generation photo, obituary or similar news printed?

These types of submissions are printed free of charge, but are subject to editing by our staff to match them to our format. They are also printed on a space-available basis. There are certain times of the year that seem to have more weddings and engagements than others so there may be some delay in printing your information during those times.

5. I'd like to place a classified ad.

Classified ads cost $5.25 for the first 25 words and 10 cents per word after the first 25 words. The deadline is 4 p.m. Friday of the week before you would like the ad to appear. We do require prepayment for classified ads, so here are your options:

A. Send a e-mail containing the complete text of your ad along with a name and telephone number at which you can be contacted to advertising@perrycountytimes.com. We will then call you to get a credit card number for payment.

B. You can also send an e-mail and call us at 582-4305 to let us know the e-mail has been sent and give us a credit card number at that time. Please keep in mind that the e-mail does not show up in our inbox the moment you hit the "send" button. Give your e-mail a little time to arrive before calling.

C. You can do it the old-fashioned way by bringing it to the office during our normal hours or mailing the text of the ad with payment to: Advance Publications, P.O. Box 130, New Bloomfield, PA 17068.

6. I'd like to place a display ad.

Display ads vary in price depending upon the size and the newspapers in which it appears (The News-Sun, Duncannon Record and/or Perry County Times). That can be quite difficult to explain via e-mail, so your best bet is to give us a call at 717-582-4305.

If you have an idea of how the ad should appear, you can send us a copy via e-mail to advertising@perrycountytimes.com. Make sure the subject line includes your business name and in some way indicates that it is an ad for the Perry County newspapers. Also, be sure to include a telephone number so one of our sales reps can contact you concerning the scheduling of your ad.

7. Can you print digital photos?

Sure thing! We actually prefer them! We ask that you send us the JPG image without making any adjustments to it. "Straight from the camera" we always say. It is likely that the digital camera will take the photo at a small resolution with a large canvas size and that is fine. A good rule of thumb is that the image should be right around 1 MB to print well in the newspapers. Anything smaller than that may print, but not be of the best quality.

Make absolutely certain that your e-mail program does not make the photo smaller when it sends it. This happens most often on the Windows platform when you right-click on the file and choose to send it to a mail recipient. A dialog box comes up that asks if you want to make the picture smaller. Make sure that you don't do this!

If you are sending a photo you have scanned, save it as a JPG with a resolution of 300.

8. Why is the web site sometimes not updated each week?

This happens rarely, but the web site has a staff of one and that person also has responsibilities to our print products, which take priority. On those occassions that the site is not updated, the following week's update will include the news and obituaries from the missed week.

9. How can I order a subscription?

Give us a call at 717-582-4305 and ask for circulation. We are not able to take subscription orders over the Internet, but you may send us the information at circulation@perrycountytimes.com and follow up with a telephone call to give us a credit card for payment.

10. Can I change the address for my subscription via e-mail?

Sure. Send your old address and new address to circulation@perrycountytimes.com.
